Summary

The Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA) is an international fisheries agreement that entered into force in 2012 to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources in the high seas of the Southern Indian Ocean. SIOFA brings together Contracting Parties and cooperating participants to manage non-tuna fishery resources, including fish, molluscs, crustaceans, and other marine species occurring beyond national jurisdictions. Its objectives are to promote sustainable fisheries, apply precautionary and ecosystem-based management approaches, protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and support the needs of developing coastal and small island developing states in the region.
